What is UI/UX Designing?
UI – User Interface
- The means through which a user interacts with a device, application, or website.
- Encompasses all elements a user may interact with: screens, pages, buttons, icons, menus, and any other visual or interactive elements.

- Refers to the overall experience a person has when interacting with a product, system, or service.
- The goal of UX is to create a positive, satisfying experience that makes users want to continue using the product.

What is Usability Heuristics?
Usability heuristics are a set of guiding principles used to evaluate the usability of a user interface. First introduced by Jakob Nielsen in 1994, they have since become the benchmark for evaluating user interfaces — also known as usability principles or usability guidelines. They serve as rules of thumb when building new programs, mobile apps, or websites that prioritise the user experience.
10 Usability Heuristics
Usability consultants Rolf Molich and Jakob Nielsen developed this set of heuristics in 1990 to identify usability problems and establish design guidelines that favour clean and efficient user controls:
- 1Visibility of System Status — "I know what's going on": Keep users informed about what is happening through appropriate feedback within a reasonable time.
- 2Match Between System and the Real World — "It speaks my language": Use language and concepts familiar to the user, following real-world conventions.
- 3User Control and Freedom — "Oops, I need to get out": Users often make mistakes. Provide clearly marked exits such as undo and redo.
- 4Consistency and Standards — "I know what that means": Users should not have to wonder whether different words, situations, or actions mean the same thing.
- 5Error Prevention — "Can't go wrong": Design carefully to prevent problems from occurring in the first place.
- 6Recognition Rather Than Recall — "I can see it": Minimise the user's memory load by making elements, actions, and options visible.
- 7Flexibility and Efficiency of Use — "I know a shortcut": Accelerators — invisible to novices — may speed up interaction for expert users.
- 8Aesthetic and Minimalist Design — "Just what I need": Remove irrelevant or rarely needed information. Every extra element competes with the relevant content.
- 9Help Users Recognise, Diagnose, and Recover from Errors — "Oops, what now?": Error messages should be in plain language, pinpoint the problem, and suggest a solution.
- 10Help and Documentation — "I need more info": Even if the system can be used without documentation, it may be necessary to provide searchable, task-focused help.
Applying Heuristics in Practice
A heuristic evaluation involves 3–5 evaluators independently inspecting a UI against the 10 heuristics and logging every violation found. Results are aggregated and rated by severity. This method surfaces a large proportion of usability problems without requiring real users — making it fast and cost-effective as a first-pass quality check.
The most valuable time to apply heuristics is during design review, before development begins. Catching a violation at the wireframe stage takes minutes to fix; catching it after implementation can take hours or days.
